Red Sox to offer purchasing opportunity to fans for select '08 gamesBOSTON -- Coming off another World Series championship and boasting a roster stacked with accomplished veterans and exciting young players, the Red Sox will again be a very hot ticket in 2008.
As part of the fifth annual Christmas at Fenway event on Dec. 8, select fans will have a chance to purchase Sox Pax and single-game tickets to 18 selected April and May games.
Because of the construction of the Year VII improvements at Fenway, the Sox won't be able to accommodate a large number of fans at the Park. Therefore, the bulk of single-game tickets will be available online at www.redsox.com beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Dec. 8. Fans can also order tickets through the touch-tone ticketing service at (617) 482-4SOX. Fans can also purchase Sox Pax at redsox.com.
For those fans who wish to buy tickets at Fenway Park on Dec. 8, it will come down to the luck of the draw. Attendees will be selected from a pool of fans who register at redsox.com between noon on Wednesday and noon on Dec. 3. Fans selected to attend the event will be notified via e-mail. All those who accept the invitation will be able to purchase tickets.
Some spots at the Fenway event will be reserved for citizens of Red Sox Nation, who will have their own drawing on redsox.com at the same allotted time as the other drawing. In addition, there will be special opportunities for members of Red Sox Kid Nation, which is presented by Hood. Those members will be notified directly with an invitation.
The Christmas at Fenway event will have select Red Sox players and alumni on hand to interact with fans. There will be roundtable discussions with club officials.
As for Sox Pax, each of them includes a ticket to four pre-selected games. Included are some beauties, including the April 8 Home Opener against the Tigers, in which the Red Sox are likely to collect their World Series rings. There will also be some Yankees games in Sox Pax, as well as Interleague games against the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Brewers.
This is the fifth straight year the Red Sox have made single-season tickets available for select April and May games in advance of the holidays. The games that will be available are as follows: April 9-10 vs. the Tigers; April 18-20 vs. the Rangers; April 22-23 against the Angels; April 29-May 1 against the Blue Jays; May 2-4 vs. the Rays; and May 19-22 against the Royals.
Fans will be able to purchase up to eight single-game tickets. At the Christmas at Fenway event, fans can purchase up to two Sox Pax at a maximum of four tickets per package.
The rest of the single-game tickets -- including Green Monster Seats and Right Field roof seats -- will be made available in late January and February.
Season tickets are still capped at 21,500 full-season equivalents with a waiting list of nearly 7,500. Fans who want to join the waiting list can call (877) RED-SOX9.
| Big jump in Cubs ticket prices for 2008 | |
| Saturday 01 December 2007 - 18:01:27 in Misc
Big jump in Cubs ticket prices for 2008After helping set a single-season attendance record in 2007, watching a game at Wrigley Field will cost some fans as much as 30 percent more in 2008.
In a letter to season-ticket holders, Cubs director of ticket operations Frank Maloney released the three-tiered pricing scale for the 13-seating areas at Wrigley. The most expensive seat (club box infield) jumps from $65 per game to a new high of $80 for 50 designated "prime" games, such as the Cubs-Sox series. The price of those seats for "regular" games will rise from $54 to $70. The price for "value" games climbs from $34 in 2007 to $50 next season. For fans who prefer the general admission bleacher seats, tickets will rise from $30 to $36 for regular games and from $40-$45 for prime games. The lowest priced ticket available will be upper deck reserved outfield seats at $10 for "value" games, $16 for regular games and $20 for prime games.
In the letter, Maloney pointed out that Cubs prices are still "significantly" lower than Fenway Park, the only ballpark close in age to 93-year-old Wrigley Field, and that the prices have been steady since 2006. The Red Sox, however, have won two World Series titles this decade, while the Cubs haven't even been to a World Series since 1945."We remain committed to our goal of being the best in baseball and to preserving the Wrigley Field experience," Maloney said in the letter. "Our commitment to winning is unwavering and our goal is to bring Cubs fans a World Series Championship in 2008."
Season ticket holders have until Dec. 18 to submit their renewals. The full 81-game pricing package in 2008 will cost $3,282 for a bleacher seat ($2,770 last season) to a high of $6,050 for an infield club box ($4,720 last season). Less expensive packages for 55-game plans and 18-game plans are also available.

| Hanna Montana Ticket Tirade | |
| Wednesday 21 November 2007 - 17:20:42 in Misc
Hanna Montana Ticket TiradeThe outcry over Hannah Montana concert tickets caused at least two states to launch investigations, has some fans considering a class-action lawsuit, and even has Ticketmaster fighting it out in court with a software company. 11,700 tickets were available for the DC show, while some were held for promotions and V.I.P's and half went to the fan club pre-sale. Buying the four ticket limit, the general public got only about 1,450 people would get tickets, but Ticketmaster believes some were essentially jumping the line, on-line. Parents line Terri Taylor from Falls Church tried to get her daughter tickets for the concert. "I dreaded going home that first day to tell her we couldn't get the tickets." The problem was some ticket brokers were hijacking the system, buying tickets and reselling them online at much higher prices. Court documents argue a company called RMG Technologies essentially tricked Ticketmaster's website. Ticketmaster.com requires a customer to enter codes, which have been graphically altered, into the site before a person can buy tickets. In theory, it prevents automated systems from cutting line, but RMG's software allegedly beat the system. According to court records, brokers used the software to buy up more than 65,000 tickets to all kinds of events in 2007. It went to court, winning an injunction shutting down the software and it's site, ticketbroketools.com, while the battle continues in court. "At that very minute, trying to get those tickets, it was sold out. It was indicated they were no longer available," said Bryan Kerrigan who couldn't get tickets. According to Ticketmaster, brokers using RMG's software could, at any time, flood the system. For each request a customer makes, just one broker using RMG's software could make hundreds of requests, coming from just one computer going after the same tickets. Ticketmaster says RMG had thousands of ticket brokers using their products. Chevy Chase ticket broker Randy Levenberg wasn't surprised some of his colleagues cheated the system. He says he doesn't do it and says the industry doesn't condone it, especially when it comes to shows aimed at kids. "It's a lot of hurt feelings and I don't want to ruin anybody's day." Ticketmaster is also under fire because they operate a service called Exchange, which is a forum for reselling tickets to shows like Hannah Montana. In fact, it is part of the basis for a counter-suit filed by RMG. It's claiming anti-trust and monopoly violations by Ticketmaster. RMG's attorney says his client denies any wrong-doing.

| Red Sox to add 800 more seats to Fenway | |
| Tuesday 20 November 2007 - 21:14:32 in Misc
Red Sox to add 800 more seats to Fenway. The Boston Red Sox are adding more than 800 new seats at Fenway Park as part of a slate of improvements planned for next season.
The new seats and standing room areas for about 60 people will be added to the pavilion level, which is the third level of seating above home plate. The pavilion area will be extended down the first base line and the third base line, where about three-quarters of the new seating will be located, the team announced. In total, Fenway's capacity will increase by about 900 fans.
The pavilion seats will cost between $75 to $90 and the standing room area tickets will cost $25."We understand the demand for such seats; thus we are adding to the supply," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said. The team also plans to install new scoreboards, new stairways and elevators and open a year-round restaurant in center field that will have a view of the ballpark.
The announcement comes the same week the team said 2008 ticket prices would increase an average of 9%. Prices at Fenway range from $12 for upper bleachers seats to $125 for field box seats. Lucchino said the added revenue was needed to keep the team competitive, particularly as the rival New York Yankees see a major revenue increase when they move into a new stadium in 2009.
The new seats and other improvements are part of the annual offseason renovations the team has undertaken at the league's oldest and smallest ballpark since the ownership group led by John Henry bought the Red Sox in 2002.Among the major renovations were adding seats above the "Green Monster" in left field in 2003. Before last season, the team added a new bleacher section on the roof deck in right field.
"For decades, there was a presumption that Fenway Park had outlived its useful life and, sentiment aside, would have to be replaced by a modern facility in another location," Lucchino said. "We are eager to see, in 2012, this ballpark become the first ever to celebrate its 100th anniversary."
| Longtime Cubs exec to take position with Chicago Blackhawks | |
| Tuesday 20 November 2007 - 17:25:57 in Misc
Longtime Cubs exec to take position with Chicago Blackhawks. John McDonough ended his 24-year tenure with the Cubs, most recently serving as team president, to take over the NHL Chicago Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks announced McDonough as the new team president at a news conference Tuesday. Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz said the best person to take over the team was "right in front of our nose." Wirtz said they wanted to bring someone in to coordinate hockey operations.
"The Cubs congratulate John McDonough on his new position," said Crane Kenney, Tribune Co. executive, to whom McDonough reported. "In his time as team president, John helped the club take an important step toward our ultimate goal -- bringing a championship to the greatest fans in baseball."
McDonough has been the Cubs' team president since Oct. 1, 2006, when he replaced Andy MacPhail, who resigned after a 96-loss season. At that time, McDonough boldly announced the Cubs' mission was to win the World Series. "The purpose of why I've been asked to do this job is for the Cubs to win the World Series -- not win the Wild Card or win the division or win the pennant," McDonough said when introduced as interim president last year. "It's time to win. It's time to win the World Series."
McDonough was behind the hiring of Lou Piniella as manager, and the overhaul of the team, which included spending more than $300 million on players such as Alfonso Soriano, Ted Lilly, Jason Marquis and Mark DeRosa. In 2007, the Cubs rebounded to win the National League Central, but they were swept by Arizona in the NL Division Series. "The Cubs were terrific to me from top to bottom," McDonough said Tuesday. "That's a big part of my life. Being part of an organization for 24-plus years and having so much respect for everybody over there, but the opportunity that Rocky presented to me -- and this came together rather quickly -- was something I was quite impressed with." McDonough's long-term job status with the Cubs was uncertain because of the pending sale of Tribune Co. and the likely sale of the Cubs. He signed a multiyear contract with the Blackhawks. Whoever replaces McDonough will likely be on an interim basis until the new ownership is named.
"We will not let the ownership transition distract us from our primary goal -- to see a championship come to the Chicago Cubs in 2008," Kenney said. "Tribune's commitment through an expanded payroll and additional capital for Wrigley Field evidences the continued focus on taking the next step for Cubs fans. "Jim Hendry has a well-constructed plan in place and is already working to strengthen our roster for 2008," Kenney said. "We also have a new, multi-million-dollar playing surface ready to welcome our team on Opening Day." McDonough met with front-office staff Tuesday at Wrigley Field to announce his resignation.
He joined the Cubs in 1983 as director of sales and promotions and became the team's marketing director in 1987. The innovative McDonough linked popular product giveaways, such as Beanie Babies, to the Cubs and was responsible for the creation of the Cubs Convention, which began in 1986 as a winter fan fest and became the prototype for other league and club events.

| Boston Red Sox Raise Ticket Prices | |
| Monday 19 November 2007 - 19:21:51 in Misc
Boston Red Sox Raise Ticket Prices :As they say, to the victors go the spoils. The Boston Red Sox, coming off their second World Series win three years, have decided to raise most of their ticket prices at Fenway Park for the 2008 season. News that the team was considering the move filtered out late last month, and follows what the team did after its 2004 World Series victory when it increased prices by close to 7 percent. According to team, ticket prices will increase an average of about 9 percent for the 2008 season.
Lower Bleacher seat prices will rise $3 to $26 each, and Field Box seats will increase to $125 a piece."We are conscious of the investment that Red Sox fans make in their beloved team," said team President and CEO Larry Lucchino in a statement. "That's in part why there was no increase on non-premium seats last year, and that's why we continue to hold the line this year on the lower priced tickets throughout the ballpark. That's also why we are adding more seats along first base and third base for 2008, quality seats that nonetheless should be affordable for most when they come on board.
The Upper Bleacher seats, currently the lowest priced tickets, will remain unchanged at $12, as will General Standing Room tickets which will also remain at the current price of $20. In addition, prices for seats in Conigliaro's Corner will remain at $25, as will Pavilion Standing Room tickets ($25). Standing Room tickets on the Green Monster and Right Field Roof Deck will remain at $30, and Pavilion Box Seats at the State Street Pavilion will remain at $90.
Between 2006 and 2007, the team held the line on ticket prices for 82 percent of it seats, but it said the 2008 increase is warranted in part because of nearly $45 million it plans to spend on improvements to Fenway Park, including trying to squeeze in more seats. Tickets will go on sale Dec. 8; details will be released in the near future, the team said.
